How do I create a Package to control what Business Admins can edit?

Packages are part of the Business Login add-on, and they're what let you control exactly which fields a Business Admin can edit on the entries they manage. Rather than giving every business full editing access, a Package lets you decide, section by section and field by field, what's open to them.

Setting up the basics

When you create a new Package, the General tab holds two required fields:

Title — simply the name of the Package, for example "Gold," "Silver," or "Bronze"

Hierarchy value — used for preferential ordering: businesses within the highest-value Package will appear first in website results, ahead of businesses on lower-value Packages

If you're using Business Login, the DCMS itself points you to the other tabs along the top to configure exactly which fields and sections are available to that Package — that's where the actual editing permissions for Business Admins are set.

It's worth thinking ahead when choosing hierarchy values — leaving room between them (for example 10, 20, 30 rather than 1, 2, 3) makes it easier to slot a new Package in between two existing ones later, without needing to renumber everything else.

Enabling a section

Beyond the General tab, every structured entry type available on your site gets its own tab — Business Directory, Blog, Events, Offers, and so on. Business Profile, Events, and Offers are included as standard; other entry types, such as Experiences or Itineraries, can be added to your site for an additional licence fee.

Before you can configure any fields within a section, you need to switch on the toggle near the top of that section's tab — it will read something like "Allow businesses to add and edit their [Section] on [your site name]." Until this is switched on, none of the field settings below it will apply.

Choosing which fields Business Admins can edit

Once a section is enabled, you'll see a list of fields for that entry type, each with its own toggle. Switch on whichever fields you want Business Admins to be able to edit themselves. Some fields — such as Title — are required and can't be switched off.

Sections with multiple entry types

Some sections cover more than one entry type. Business Directory, for example, includes Business, Food & Drink, and Accommodation — each with its own dedicated sub-tab. This is worth paying close attention to: a common mistake is enabling fields for the Business entry type and stopping there. If Food & Drink and Accommodation aren't configured individually as well, Business Admins won't be able to edit any entries that use those types, even though the section itself is switched on.

If a section has sub-tabs, treat each one as its own checklist rather than assuming enabling one covers the rest.

💡 Top Tip: After building a new Package, it's worth reviewing every sub-tab within every section you've enabled, rather than just the first one — that's where the Food & Drink and Accommodation-style gaps tend to slip through unnoticed.
